One of the major analysts of US geopolitics is Andrew Bacevich. His background in both active military service and academia gives him an excellent perspective from which to explain where we are — and where our present course is leading.
All of these are worth reading, as are (on a larger scale) his books. I esp. draw your attention to his testimony before Congress on 15 July 2008, and to the two TomDispatch articles adapted from his new book.
